On August 20, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Pacific Fleet conducted missile strikes on targets near the coast of the South Kuril Islands (referred to as the "Northern Territories" by Japan) during a planned exercise.
During the exercise, the targets simulated enemy vessels at a distance of over 300 kilometers. The guided missile cruiser "Varyag" launched two "Volcano" anti-ship missiles, while the nuclear-powered submarine "Omsk" fired "Granite" cruise missiles.
