Chiron, also known as KP-SAM Shingung, is a South Korean MANPADS for short-range air defence.
Chiron gives infantry and light units a portable missile option against low-flying aircraft and helicopters. MANPADS are small compared with vehicle-based air-defence systems, but they can complicate enemy air operations by creating dispersed local threat zones around troops, bases, and critical points.
The system is designed for rapid local engagement of low-altitude targets such as helicopters and aircraft.
A MANPADS system is valuable because it is portable, quick to deploy, and difficult for an attacker to locate in advance. Chiron fills the lowest layer of air defence, below systems like Cheongung and fixed radar networks. It is especially relevant for protecting manoeuvre units and rear-area positions from close air threats.
Chiron matters because short-range air defence remains essential even in a missile-heavy security environment.
High-end interceptors cannot cover every unit or terrain feature. Portable systems like Chiron provide local commanders with their own air-defence option, adding uncertainty for enemy pilots and helicopter crews. In HiWars, it helps represent the tactical air-defence layer of Korean forces.
