Research Notes

Stretched and re-engined Puma successor

The AS332 evolved the Puma into a larger twin-engine medium utility helicopter.

The AS332 Super Puma was developed by Aerospatiale as a larger, more capable successor to the SA 330 Puma. It added more powerful engines, a stretched airframe, and improved systems for medium transport, search-and-rescue, and military support missions. The later Airbus H215 designation keeps the Super Puma lineage alive in a simplified modern production and support framework.

Medium-lift utility with all-weather roles

Twin-engine reliability and cabin capacity make Super Puma a flexible utility helicopter.

Super Puma design emphasizes twin-engine reliability, cabin capacity, range, and the ability to operate in demanding civil or military environments. Military users can configure it for troop transport, search and rescue, medical evacuation, logistics, and special support tasks. Its value lies in flexibility: it is not a dedicated attack aircraft, but a workhorse platform for missions that need payload and endurance.

Civil-military global workhorse

The AS332 family became a durable global civil-military utility helicopter line.

Super Puma and H215-family aircraft have served with military, government, offshore, and rescue operators worldwide. Their longevity comes from a broad mission envelope and continued manufacturer support. For military databases, the AS332 matters because many armed forces use it for the unglamorous but essential movement, rescue, and support missions that keep operations functioning.
