SA 330 Puma

The SA 330 Puma was designed by Sud Aviation to meet a French Army requirement for a medium transport helicopter capable of carrying troops and cargo in demanding conditions. Its success led to broad export service and licensed or derivative production. The Puma family became a foundation for later Super Puma and Cougar developments, giving France a durable medium-lift helicopter lineage.

Technically, the SA 330 is a twin-engine medium utility helicopter with enough cabin volume for troop transport, internal cargo, stretchers, or mission equipment. Its layout balances lift, range, and field maintainability, making it useful to armies and air forces that need more capacity than light helicopters but less complexity than heavy-lift types. Many fleets received avionics, navigation, and defensive upgrades over time.

Operationally, the Puma became a standard medium-lift workhorse. Users employed it for troop insertion, logistics, casualty evacuation, search and rescue, special operations, and peacekeeping support. Its wide adoption and upgrade path show the value of a robust medium helicopter that can be adapted to both conventional military and civil emergency missions.
