Research Notes

Turkish-Italian Attack Helicopter Program

medium

T129 ATAK is a Turkish attack helicopter developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries under a program based on the AgustaWestland A129 Mangusta. Turkey adapted the design with local mission systems, avionics, weapons integration, and environmental changes for Turkish Armed Forces requirements. The program became a flagship example of Türkiye's effort to localize complex aerospace and attack-helicopter capability.

Twin-Engine Light Attack Helicopter

medium

The T129 combines a tandem cockpit, electro-optical targeting, helmet sighting, cannon, rockets, guided missiles, and defensive aids in a relatively compact twin-engine helicopter. Compared with heavier attack helicopters, it offers lower weight and potentially lower operating cost, but less payload and armor. Its Turkish avionics and weapons integration, including Roketsan munitions, make it more than a simple licensed copy.

Close Air Support and Counterinsurgency

medium

Operationally, T129 supports close air support, armed reconnaissance, escort, and counterinsurgency missions. Its size and weapons fit suit mountainous and regional operations where persistence and precision matter. Export prospects have been affected by engine and licensing issues, but the helicopter remains important for Turkish Army aviation and for Türkiye's broader defense-industrial ambitions.
