The Tu-22M Backfire was not a simple Blinder upgrade; it was a much larger redesign with variable-sweep wings, new engines, and a role centered on long-range strategic and maritime strike. Western sources sometimes associated it with the Tu-26 designation, but the Tu-22M name is the standard public designation.
Backfire variants could carry heavy anti-ship missiles, strike missiles, and conventional bomb loads. The later Tu-22M3 improved engines, intakes, speed, and range, making the aircraft a persistent concern for NATO naval planners and a core Soviet/Russian long-range aviation asset.
