British artillery system for the 1990s

AS90 replaced older British self-propelled guns with a modern tracked 155 mm system.

AS90 was developed to replace older British self-propelled artillery including Abbot and M109 systems. Entering service in the 1990s, it gave Royal Artillery field regiments a modern tracked 155 mm platform with improved mobility, fire-control integration, and crew protection. The name itself reflects the original concept: an Artillery System for the 1990s.

Tracked 155 mm gun for armored formations

AS90 provides protected tracked 155 mm fire support for British armored units.

The AS90 combines a tracked armored chassis, 155 mm gun, turreted layout, and onboard systems for indirect fire support. It was designed to move with armored forces and deliver responsive artillery fire while protecting the crew from small arms and fragments. Compared with newer wheeled systems, AS90 is heavier and less road-mobile, but better suited to tracked armored manoeuvre.

British service and Ukrainian transfer

AS90's long British service and transfer to Ukraine renewed its operational relevance.

AS90 served for decades as the British Army's main large-calibre self-propelled artillery system. The type became internationally visible again when the United Kingdom supplied AS90 guns to Ukraine. Its service life now illustrates both the value of mature artillery stocks and the pressure on older NATO systems to keep pace with longer-range modern guns.
