Research Notes

Early Cold War 155 mm SPH

medium

The M44 was a U.S. 155 mm self-propelled howitzer based on the M41 Walker Bulldog chassis family.

The M44 was developed in the early Cold War period to provide mobile 155 mm artillery on a tracked chassis. FAS describes the system and its later Turkish M44T upgrade, while TankNutDave places it alongside the M52 as a postwar U.S. self-propelled artillery design. The vehicle used an open fighting compartment after early enclosed-compartment problems.

Tracked 155 mm fire support

medium

The M44 offered heavier artillery fire than 105 mm systems while retaining tracked mobility.

The M44's 155 mm gun gave armored and mechanized forces a more powerful indirect-fire option than light howitzers. Its tracked chassis improved mobility over difficult ground, but the open compartment exposed the crew and reflected the compromises of early postwar SPH design. It was a transitional step toward more successful enclosed or turreted artillery systems.

Replaced but exported

medium

The M44 served with U.S. and allied armies before later systems such as the M109 displaced it.

The M44 did not define U.S. artillery for as long as the M109, but it filled an important development phase. It served with U.S. units and was exported to allied armies, with Turkey later undertaking major M44T upgrades. The system shows the postwar search for tracked artillery that could keep pace with armored operations.
