The Haruna class was built for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in the early 1970s as a helicopter destroyer. It reflected Japan's need to extend anti-submarine warfare reach in the surrounding seas while staying within JMSDF destroyer classifications. The class carried multiple helicopters and became a major step in Japanese naval aviation capability.
Haruna-class ships combined a large flight deck, hangar facilities, sonar, ASW weapons, guns, and command spaces. Helicopters were the defining feature because they extended submarine detection and engagement range far beyond shipboard sensors. The class was therefore an ASW aviation platform as much as a surface combatant.
Haruna and her sister ship influenced later JMSDF helicopter destroyers such as Shirane and, conceptually, larger aviation-capable destroyers. Their value lies in showing Japan's early move toward helicopter-centered escort groups for sea-lane defense and submarine hunting.
