Rubis

The Rubis class was France's first nuclear-powered attack submarine class. It was developed to give the Marine Nationale an undersea escort, intelligence, and anti-submarine capability able to support France's nuclear deterrent and carrier operations. The later Amethyste standard improved hydrodynamics, quieting, sonar, and combat capability, keeping the class relevant until the Suffren/Barracuda generation began taking over.

Technically, Rubis is notable for being very compact by nuclear attack submarine standards. The class uses a pressurized-water reactor, torpedo tubes for F17 torpedoes and SM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles, radar, sonar, and an endurance measured in weeks rather than days. Its smaller size helped operations in littoral waters, while nuclear propulsion gave sustained submerged mobility unavailable to conventional boats.

In service, Rubis-class submarines supported French carrier groups, strategic submarine protection, intelligence collection, and anti-submarine patrols. They remained operational for decades, even as the newer Suffren class began replacing them. Their long service life makes them a key part of France's independent nuclear-submarine capability and broader blue-water naval posture.
