The Tourville class was built in the 1970s as a French guided-missile frigate class with strong ASW emphasis.
The F67 Tourville class consisted of three French Navy frigates built at Arsenal de Lorient during the 1970s. They were designed during a period when NATO navies gave high priority to anti-submarine warfare against Soviet submarines, while still needing surface combatants capable of escort, patrol, and missile-armed presence missions.
The class combined sonar systems, torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, guns, and two helicopters.
Tourville-class frigates used steam-turbine propulsion and carried a broad ASW sensor and weapon suite, including hull and variable-depth sonars, torpedoes, and a double hangar for Lynx helicopters. Exocet anti-ship missiles and gun armament gave them surface-strike and self-defence options. Their size allowed sustained blue-water escort work.
The ships served for decades in French Navy operations before retirement in the 2000s and 2010s.
Operationally, the Tourville class served as major French surface escorts across Cold War and post-Cold-War missions. They participated in naval exercises, patrols, and task-group escort roles, with ASW helicopters extending their submarine-hunting reach. The class was eventually retired as newer French frigates took over escort and anti-submarine missions.
