The Remington Model 700 was introduced in 1962 as a commercial bolt-action rifle and became one of the most influential modern rifle actions. Its military significance comes from derivative sniper rifles, especially the U.S. Marine Corps M40 and U.S. Army M24 families. The rifle's action also became a standard footprint for custom precision rifles and aftermarket parts.
The Model 700 uses a cylindrical receiver, two-lug rotating bolt, and strong aftermarket ecosystem. Military and law-enforcement sniper variants use heavy barrels, precision stocks or chassis, optics rails, tuned triggers, and match ammunition. The base rifle is not automatically a sniper rifle, but the action's accuracy potential and modularity made it a common foundation for precision builds.
Operationally, Model 700-derived rifles served for decades in military sniper and police marksman roles. Their value came from repeatable accuracy, maintainability, and an enormous support ecosystem. Newer modular rifles have displaced many legacy 700-based sniper systems, but the Remington 700 action remains a reference point for American precision-rifle design.
