Development history
mediumShrike/MCR represents an attempt to turn the AR platform into a compact belt-fed 5.56 mm support weapon.
The Ares Shrike 5.56 was developed as a lightweight belt-fed weapon or upper-receiver system compatible with AR-15/M16/M4-type lower receivers. Later marketed through FightLite as the MCR concept, it sought to give a familiar rifle architecture light-machine-gun characteristics without the size of an M249-class weapon. Its development history is therefore tied to modular small-arms experimentation more than to a major U.S. military procurement program.
