Research Notes

Russian active-radar medium-range air-to-air missile

The R-77, known in NATO reporting as AA-12 Adder, is Russia's principal active-radar beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile family. It was developed to give Russian fighters a fire-and-update capability broadly comparable in role to Western active radar missiles, allowing the launch aircraft to support an engagement without relying on continuous semi-active illumination to the target.

BVR engagement with terminal active seeker

The missile combines inertial midcourse flight with radar updates from the launch aircraft and an active seeker for terminal homing. This profile lets aircraft such as MiG-29 and Su-27 derivatives engage targets at medium range while preserving maneuver options. Later R-77 variants focus on improved propulsion, seeker performance, and resistance to countermeasures.

Capability depends on aircraft radar and inventory quality

R-77 effectiveness is not determined by the missile alone. Aircraft radar range, datalink reliability, seeker version, pilot tactics, and electronic-warfare conditions all shape real combat performance. Export and legacy stocks can differ substantially from newer domestic variants, so the name R-77 should be read as a family rather than one fixed capability.
