The CIA A-12 Oxcart was a reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed's Skunk Works to replace the U-2 spy planes. The A-12 Oxcart was built to restore high-altitude strategic reconnaissance against increasingly capable Soviet air defenses.

The A-12 Oxcart was a CIA-led reconnaissance aircraft developed with Lockheed after the U-2 became increasingly vulnerable to advanced air-defense systems. The CIA describes the aircraft as the U-2's successor, created to fly extremely high and fast while reducing radar detectability. Lockheed's Skunk Works had to solve problems in titanium structure, fuel, engines, navigation, pilot life support, and thermal management. Those engineering demands made Oxcart one of the defining classified aerospace programs of the Cold War.

Mach-Three Reconnaissance Envelope

The aircraft combined extreme speed, altitude, and specialized sensors for denied-area intelligence collection.

Oxcart's core advantage was its flight envelope.
