Development history

medium

YF-23 was Northrop/McDonnell Douglas's Advanced Tactical Fighter demonstrator.

The Northrop-McDonnell Douglas YF-23A Black Widow II was one of two competing demonstrators in the U.S. Air Force Advanced Tactical Fighter program. The USAF awarded demonstration contracts in 1986, and two YF-23 prototypes flew before the Air Force selected the Lockheed-led YF-22 for production.

Technical profile

medium

Stealth shaping, speed, and ATF demonstrator architecture made the YF-23 distinctive.

The YF-23 combined stealth shaping, diamond-like wings, V-tail surfaces, buried engines, and high-speed/high-altitude performance goals. Public sources emphasize that the aircraft demonstrated stealth and speed strongly, while the competition also weighed agility, maintainability, risk, and production considerations.

Operational use

medium

It is significant as a prototype and acquisition case, not as an operational fighter.

The YF-23 never entered service, but it remains important as a benchmark for stealth-fighter design and acquisition tradeoffs. Its story should be framed as prototype evaluation, not a cancelled operational squadron aircraft. That framing gives readers useful context without overstating the aircraft's fielded role.
