AMX-13 DCA

The AMX-13 DCA was a French Cold War answer to the need for mobile air defense close to armored formations. The system used the existing AMX-13 chassis to field air-defense capability without designing an entirely new vehicle.

The DCA variant placed a large anti-aircraft turret on a light tracked chassis. Public profiles identify twin 30 mm Hispano-Suiza guns and an Oeil Noir radar installation, giving the crew a better chance of detecting and engaging fast aircraft than optical-only guns. The design was compact and specialized: useful for point and column defense, but limited by the short range and reaction time typical of gun-based air-defense systems.

The AMX-13 DCA was produced in limited numbers and served during the later Cold War. Its importance lies in the transition it represents: armies still needed rapid-fire guns against low aircraft, but radar-guided missiles and integrated air-defense systems were becoming more capable. As a result, the DCA is a useful example of a late gun-based SPAAG optimized for armored-unit protection before newer French air-defense systems took over.
