FN Minimi

The FN Minimi, whose name reflects 'mini-mitrailleuse,' is a Belgian light machine gun family developed by FN Herstal. The French Army identifies the Minimi as a light machine gun, and FN Herstal's current 7.62 Mk3 product line shows the family continues to evolve. The Minimi became globally important through 5.56 mm squad automatic weapon roles and later heavier-caliber variants.

The Minimi's mission is to let a squad or fire team generate suppressive fire while remaining mobile. A lighter weapon and ammunition load than 7.62 mm GPMGs makes it easier to carry during patrols and assaults, while belt feeding provides longer bursts than ordinary rifles. The 7.62 Mk3 variant addresses users who want more range and barrier penetration while retaining Minimi handling concepts.

The Minimi family is significant because it adapts to many tactical niches. Shorter variants suit airborne or compact operations, vehicle variants serve mounted roles, and 7.62 mm models extend reach and effect. The design also influenced the U.S. M249 SAW and many allied squad-automatic-weapon programs, making it one of the clearest examples of a Belgian design shaping global infantry fire support.
