Ticonderoga-class

The Ticonderoga class was ordered from the late 1970s as the U.S. Navy's Aegis cruiser family. The class used Spruance-class machinery and hull lineage but added the Aegis combat system and cruiser command functions, making it the fleet's premier air-defense surface combatant for decades. Later vertical-launch ships greatly expanded missile capacity and strike flexibility compared with the first five arm-launcher hulls.

Ticonderoga-class cruisers are defined by the SPY-1 radar, Aegis command-and-control, Standard Missile integration, anti-submarine systems, strike missiles, and battle-force air-defense command capability. The VLS-equipped ships became especially flexible because they could carry mixed missile loads for air defense, land attack, anti-submarine warfare, and later ballistic-missile-defense-related missions. This class-level entry should clearly be a cruiser page, not a destroyer page.

Operationally, the class served as carrier strike group air-defense commander, missile-defense escort, land-attack shooter, and multi-mission cruiser. Its long career also shows the sustainment challenge of aging high-end surface combatants, with retirement plans extending into the 2020s. The class page should remain broader than CG-47 by covering both early and later configurations.
