Research Notes

Six-ship UAE corvette class

The Baynunah-class page covers the full six-vessel program rather than a single ship.

At class level, Baynunah describes a six-ship UAE Navy corvette program based on the Combattante BR70 family. Army Recognition profiles the class as a UAE Navy corvette developed by French company CMN, while Naval Today reported commissioning of the final vessel in 2017. This makes the class a coherent fleet capability rather than an isolated procurement item.

Patrol, surveillance, and anti-surface package

The class is designed for patrol, surveillance, interception, minelaying, and anti-surface warfare in regional waters.

The Baynunah class combines patrol endurance with combat capability. Army Recognition describes its roles across patrol, surveillance, minelaying, interception, and anti-surface missions. Its compact size makes it suitable for Gulf operations, while missiles and self-defense systems give it more deterrent value than a patrol vessel. This blend is typical of modern corvettes built for coastal states with high-value maritime infrastructure.

Locally built naval capability

The class gave the UAE a modern corvette squadron and strengthened domestic shipbuilding through ADSB production.

In service, the full Baynunah class supports UAE maritime security and regional presence. The program's industrial side is especially important: most ships were built by Abu Dhabi Ship Building after the lead ship, increasing domestic naval construction experience. The class therefore improves fleet capability and supports national defense-industry goals at the same time.
