Overview
BRG-15
The FN BRG-15 was a heavy machine gun developed by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal as a potential successor to the Browning M2HB, featuring a powerful 15.5x106mm cartridge with a muzzle energy of 40,000 joules. The project, initiated in 1983, was discontinued in the early 1990s due to a shift in focus to other developments, despite the BRG-15's innovative features like a dual feeding system and quick-change barrel assembly.

Research Notes

FN attempt to outclass the Browning M2HB

medium

The FN BRG-15 was a Belgian heavy machine-gun program intended to provide more armor penetration and range than the .50-caliber Browning M2HB. FN explored a 15 mm class cartridge, later associated with 15.5 mm development, to approach a Western counterpart to large-caliber Soviet heavy machine guns. The project showed serious technical ambition but did not become a standard production weapon.

Very powerful heavy machine gun with demanding ammunition

medium

The BRG-15's appeal was its high-velocity, large-caliber ammunition and gas-operated automatic fire, promising better effects against light armor than standard .50 BMG guns. That same ammunition also created problems: barrel wear, logistics, and integration costs were higher than simply retaining existing M2HB stocks. The design was potent, but potency alone did not guarantee adoption.

Shelved as FN prioritized more viable programs

medium

The BRG-15 was ultimately shelved in the early 1990s as FN faced funding and market constraints and focused on programs with clearer adoption prospects. In database terms, it is valuable as a near-miss weapon: a technically capable attempt to replace a legacy heavy machine gun that failed because logistics, cost, and institutional inertia favored the older .50-caliber ecosystem.
