The Niteroi class was built around a British Vosper Thornycroft frigate design and became a key modernization step for the Brazilian Navy. Ships were completed both overseas and in Brazil, giving the program shipbuilding and systems-integration value beyond the hulls themselves.
The class included anti-submarine and general-purpose configurations, with weapons and sensors arranged around escort, patrol, and surface-combat tasks. Modernization work later updated combat systems and kept the ships relevant after their original 1970s baseline aged.
Niteroi-class frigates remained important to Brazilian fleet operations for decades while newer Tamandare-class ships were planned and built. The class should be treated as a major national surface-combatant family, not merely a legacy British-derived design.
