Overview
An-2 Colt
The Antonov An-2, a robust and versatile single-engine biplane designed in the 1940s, has a remarkable production history with over 18,000 units built until 1991. Known for its low stall speed and short-field performance, it has been adapted for various roles, including utility transport and improvised combat applications, such as dropping barrel bombs during the Croatian War and serving as an attack platform in the Vietnam War.

Research Notes

Postwar Utility Requirement

The An-2 began as Antonov's rugged answer to remote transport and agricultural flying needs.

The An-2 was the first aircraft of Oleg Antonov's design bureau and flew on 31 August 1947. It was conceived less as a high-performance combat aircraft than as a dependable multipurpose machine for regional transport, agricultural work, liaison duties, and operations from rough fields. Its importance came from the combination of simplicity, payload flexibility, and the ability to keep flying in places where paved runways and dense maintenance networks were not available.

STOL Biplane Architecture

High-lift wings, strong landing gear, and a roomy fuselage made the Colt unusually practical.

The aircraft's biplane layout gave it very large wing area and strong low-speed handling. Antonov emphasized high-lift devices, low-pressure tires, and optional skis or floats, which allowed the An-2 to use small unpaved strips, snowfields, or water operations depending on fit. This made the type useful as a troop transport, cargo aircraft, parachute platform, ambulance, survey aircraft, and agricultural sprayer rather than a single-purpose military airframe.

Long International Production Life

The Colt became one of the most widely used utility aircraft of the Cold War era.

Serial production began in the Soviet Union and expanded through Ukraine, Poland, and China, where the design became known as the Y-5. The An-2 served civilian agencies and armed forces across Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Its longevity is tied to the same qualities that shaped the original design: it could carry useful loads into austere areas, remain repairable by modest facilities, and shift between civil and military support roles without major redesign.
