Research Notes

Ramp-equipped An-24 derivative

The An-26 adapted the An-24 family into a ramp-equipped tactical cargo aircraft.

The An-26 was developed from the An-24 transport family to provide a more practical military cargo aircraft with a rear loading ramp. Antonov created the type to improve tactical transport efficiency, especially for bulky cargo and austere-airfield operations. Its NATO reporting name, Curl, became familiar because the aircraft spread widely across Soviet-aligned and export users.

Twin-turboprop cargo aircraft with sliding ramp

The An-26's rear ramp made it a flexible light tactical airlifter.

The An-26's key feature is its rear cargo ramp, which can support loading, unloading, and airdrop missions more effectively than side-door transports. Twin turboprops, high wing, and rugged landing gear make it suitable for regional military transport and rougher airfields. The aircraft is smaller than the An-12 but much more economical for lighter tactical loads.

Common transport across many air forces

The An-26 became a common light military transport because it was rugged and economical.

An-26 aircraft served with many Warsaw Pact, Asian, African, and Latin American air arms, including Chinese-related inventories and support networks. Its usefulness came from simple maintenance and the ability to carry cargo, troops, medical loads, or special equipment. The type remains important because many countries still rely on aging Soviet-era transports for everyday military logistics.
