Overview
The Antonov An-74 is an upgraded transport aircraft designed for Arctic and Antarctic operations, capable of carrying cargo and personnel in extreme temperatures and on low-grade airstrips. It features enhanced STOL performance, de-icing systems, and variants for military roles, including the An-74MP for marine patrol and the An-74T freighter, with a general cargo capacity of around 11 tons.

Research Notes

Short-field transport with over-wing engines

The An-72/74 used over-wing engines to improve short-field transport performance.

The An-72/74 family was developed by Antonov as a short takeoff and landing transport with distinctive engines mounted above and ahead of the wing. This arrangement used blown-wing effects to improve lift at low speeds, allowing operation from shorter or rougher runways. The An-74 derivative extended the concept toward Arctic, polar, and special transport tasks.

Coanda-effect lift and rough-field utility

Over-wing engines and a rear ramp make the An-72/74 a distinctive STOL cargo aircraft.

High-mounted turbofans blow exhaust over the wing and flaps, increasing lift during takeoff and landing. The high wing, rear ramp, and robust landing gear support cargo operations from austere strips. This unusual configuration makes the aircraft visually distinctive and practically useful for remote transport missions where runway length and surface quality are limiting factors.

Specialized transport for remote regions

The Coaler family is a specialized short-field transport rather than a mass tactical airlifter.

An-72 and An-74 aircraft served with military, government, and civil operators for cargo, patrol, polar support, and special missions. The family did not reach the production scale of the An-26, but it fills a more specialized niche. Its importance lies in solving a difficult transport problem: carrying useful loads from short, unimproved, or remote airfields.
