PHL-03 export identity

AR2 is the export-associated designation for a Chinese 300 mm long-range MLRS related to the PHL-03 family.

The AR2 is closely associated with the PHL-03 / Type 03 family of Chinese 300 mm multiple rocket launchers. Army Recognition identifies the PHL-03 as a NORINCO-developed long-range, truck-mounted MLRS also designated AR2 for international customers. Army Guide likewise links PHL03/Type 03 with the AR2 export name. This places AR2 in the lineage of heavy rocket artillery influenced by the Soviet BM-30 Smerch concept but adapted through Chinese manufacturing and electronics.

Twelve-tube 300 mm rocket launcher

The system uses a heavy wheeled chassis and a 12-tube launcher for long-range area fires.

AR2's design emphasizes volume and range. A heavy truck chassis carries the launcher, while 300 mm rockets deliver larger warheads over longer distances than lighter MLRS systems. The platform is suited to counter-battery, interdiction, and deep fire missions where a battery can saturate an area or strike preplanned targets. Export variants add appeal by combining known large-caliber rocket concepts with Chinese navigation, fire-control, and support systems.

Heavy rocket artillery for export users

AR2/PHL-03-type systems serve as long-range artillery assets for China and selected foreign operators.

In service terms, AR2 fills the heavy end of rocket artillery, offering reach and salvo weight beyond older systems such as 122 mm launchers. Its export visibility shows how Chinese artillery systems have become part of the global market for stand-off fires. The system's significance is amplified by modern conflicts where long-range fires, rapid displacement, and guided or corrected rockets can shape operational tempo.
