Tube-Launched Loitering Munition

The CH-901 is a compact Chinese loitering munition designed for reconnaissance-attack missions from several launch platforms.

The CH-901 occupies the boundary between missile and unmanned aircraft. Open sources describe it as a CASC-developed loitering munition that can be launched from the ground, vehicles, aircraft, or unmanned combat aircraft. Its purpose is to give small units or larger launch platforms a weapon that can search, identify, and attack targets after launch instead of following a simple ballistic or direct-flight path.

Flexible Launch Concepts

The weapon's compact form supports individual, vehicle, and swarm-like launch arrangements.

The CH-901's military value comes from flexible deployment. A tube-launched design can be carried by dismounted forces, mounted on light vehicles, or packaged in multi-tube launchers for larger salvos. That flexibility supports reconnaissance-strike cycles at shorter ranges than MALE UAVs, letting units use a munition to both find and engage exposed vehicles, positions, or point targets. It also reflects the global trend toward loitering munitions as an intermediate category between artillery, drones, and guided missiles.

Part Of China's Loitering-Munition Portfolio

CH-901 shows how Chinese manufacturers moved beyond large UAV exports into tactical attritable systems.

For the HiWars equipment database, the CH-901 is important because it represents a different layer of unmanned warfare from the better-known CH-4 and CH-5. Instead of persistence over many hours, it emphasizes local responsiveness, low logistical burden, and expendable precision attack. Its appearance in airshow and export reporting indicates that Chinese suppliers are competing across the full unmanned spectrum, from battlefield loitering weapons to theater-level surveillance aircraft.
