Research Notes

China's first large AEW&C aircraft

The KJ-2000 is a Chinese airborne early warning and control aircraft based on the Il-76 airframe. Developed after access to foreign AEW technology became politically constrained, it gave the People's Liberation Army Air Force a large radar command platform able to monitor broad airspace and coordinate fighter operations beyond ground-radar coverage.

Wide-area radar and battle management

The aircraft's large dorsal radar array supports long-range air surveillance, track management, and command-and-control functions. In operational terms, the KJ-2000 helps turn fighter patrols and surface-based sensors into a coordinated air-defense network, particularly over maritime approaches or regions where fixed radar coverage is limited.

Foundation for later Chinese AEW fleets

Although limited airframe availability constrained the KJ-2000 fleet size, the programme was strategically important because it established domestic experience in large airborne radar integration and battle-management operations. Lessons from the type fed into more numerous follow-on systems such as the KJ-200 and KJ-500.
