Research Notes

Soviet heavy supersonic anti-ship missile

The P-500 Bazalt was a large Soviet naval anti-ship cruise missile developed for surface combatants and submarine-related launch concepts. It formed part of the Soviet approach to threatening carrier groups with long-range, high-speed salvo attacks.

Large warhead and high-speed saturation logic

Bazalt emphasized speed, range, and destructive payload rather than compactness. Its tactical logic depended on launching multiple large missiles to stress shipboard air defenses, with guidance and target acquisition integrated into the broader Soviet maritime reconnaissance-strike system.

Cold War cruiser weapon with later replacement path

The missile is associated with large Soviet and Russian naval platforms, including Slava-class cruisers. It was eventually complemented or replaced in some roles by later P-1000 Vulkan and other modern missiles, but remains historically important as a signature Soviet anti-carrier weapon.
