PLZ-89 in China's artillery modernization

medium

PLZ-89 helps show how Chinese ground forces modernized tracked self-propelled artillery.

The PLZ-89, also known as Type 89, was one of China's key 122 mm tracked self-propelled howitzers before newer PLZ-07 systems appeared. It was developed to give motorized and armored formations artillery that could move under armor and keep pace better than towed guns. Its lineage is closely tied to the Soviet D-30 122 mm artillery tradition, adapted through Chinese production and vehicle integration.

Tracked fire support with protected crew space

medium

The platform balances mobility, ammunition carriage, protected operation, and indirect-fire responsiveness.

PLZ-89 uses a tracked chassis with a rear turret carrying a 122 mm howitzer and associated ammunition. The vehicle improves crew protection and mobility compared with towed artillery while retaining a lighter 122 mm ammunition burden. Its technical limitations include shorter range and smaller shell effect than 155 mm systems, but it offers practical fire support where mobility and quantity are important.

Brigade and group-army fire support

medium

Its battlefield value depends on fire-control, ammunition supply, and rapid displacement after firing.

Operationally, PLZ-89 provided responsive indirect fires for PLA formations transitioning away from older towed and lightly protected systems. It could support infantry and armor with suppression and high-explosive fires while repositioning faster than towed guns. Its later replacement by PLZ-07 in some roles reflects normal artillery evolution rather than immediate obsolescence.
