Overview
The Udaloy class destroyer is a Soviet-designed anti-submarine warfare vessel, measuring approximately 163 meters and displacing around 7,900 tons. Equipped with advanced weapon systems, including vertical launch systems for missiles, torpedoes, and anti-aircraft artillery, as well as helicopter facilities, these destroyers excel in detecting and engaging submarines while also providing surface and air defense capabilities.

Development history

medium

Project 1155 was developed as a dedicated Soviet anti-submarine warfare destroyer.

The Udaloy class, Project 1155, was developed to give the Soviet Navy a large surface combatant optimized for anti-submarine warfare. It complemented missile-heavy anti-surface ships by emphasizing sensors, helicopters, and weapons suited to finding and engaging submarines. The design reflected a division of labor in Soviet surface groups: some ships carried long-range anti-ship missiles, while Udaloy-class vessels protected formations from undersea threats. This specialization produced a ship with strong ASW capability, good endurance, and enough self-defense weapons to operate as part of a larger naval task group.

Technical profile

medium

The class combines hull sonar, ASW missiles, torpedoes, helicopters, and layered short-range defenses.

Udaloy-class destroyers are built around anti-submarine detection and engagement. Their equipment includes sonar systems, anti-submarine missiles or rockets, torpedo armament, and aviation facilities for shipborne helicopters. The helicopter component is especially important because it extends search range beyond the ship's own sensors and allows rapid prosecution of contacts. The class also carries guns, point-defense missiles, and close-in weapons for limited surface and air defense. That balance made it a capable escort, though its original design did not give it the same long-range strike role as Soviet missile cruisers and destroyers.

Operational use

medium

Udaloy ships served as major ASW escorts and later became candidates for modernization.

Operationally, Udaloy-class destroyers have been used for fleet escort, submarine screening, patrol, and presence missions. Their endurance and aviation facilities made them useful beyond coastal waters, particularly when protecting higher-value ships or operating in blue-water groups. In Russian service, surviving units have attracted modernization attention because their hulls remain useful but their original weapons and electronics reflect late-Soviet assumptions. Upgrades can add strike missiles and improved combat systems, shifting the class from a specialized ASW escort toward a more general-purpose combatant while retaining its anti-submarine strengths.
