China's first 5.8 mm designated marksman rifle
mediumQBU-88 extended the Type 95-era 5.8 mm small-arms family into a squad precision role.
The QBU-88 was developed as a Chinese designated marksman rifle chambered for the 5.8x42 mm cartridge family. It arrived alongside China's broader transition away from older 7.62 mm Soviet-pattern weapons toward indigenous 5.8 mm small arms. Its role was to give infantry units a more accurate, optics-equipped rifle without moving to a full sniper system or a foreign cartridge.
