QW-2

The QW-2 is a later Chinese MANPADS design that improved on the QW-1 family for short-range air defense. It is often discussed in relation to Russian Igla-type systems because of similarities in role and external concept. Its development reflects a normal MANPADS progression: improve seeker performance, target engagement envelope, and resistance to countermeasures while keeping the system portable.

Technically, QW-2 remains a shoulder-launched infrared missile, but its value lies in improved performance against low-flying targets and more difficult engagement conditions. The operator still needs training in target recognition, launch envelope, battery/coolant handling, and post-launch displacement. MANPADS are simple compared with radar SAMs, but effective use is not automatic.

Operationally, QW-2 is a local air-defense and area-denial weapon. It can complicate helicopter assault, close air support, and UAV operations, especially in terrain that provides concealment to missile teams. It is limited by short range, finite seeker capability, and countermeasures, so it is most effective when layered with guns, radar-guided missiles, observers, and disciplined engagement control.
