Research Notes

China's first catapult-equipped carrier

Fujian, also associated with the Type 003 designation, marks China's move beyond ski-jump carrier aviation. Its electromagnetic catapult launch system is the defining change: it allows heavier aircraft launches and broader air-wing options than Liaoning or Shandong, making the ship a major step in the People's Liberation Army Navy carrier program.

Heavier launches and more flexible air operations

Catapult launch improves takeoff weight, fuel load, weapons load, and support-aircraft options. That matters because carrier power depends on more than fighters; airborne early warning, tanking, and persistent patrols determine how far the group can see and fight. Fujian narrows part of the capability gap with U.S. carriers, though it remains conventionally powered and smaller than Ford-class ships.

A training and doctrine leap as much as a ship

Fujian's strategic impact depends on more than commissioning status. China must prove deck-cycle efficiency, aircraft integration, maintenance depth, escort coordination, and long-range sustainment. The ship is therefore both an operational asset and a learning platform for future Chinese carrier groups built around catapult aviation.
