The Type 052B Guangzhou/Luyang I class was an important early-2000s PLAN destroyer that integrated Russian-derived air-defense technology into a Chinese-built hull. It represented a major step beyond older Type 051 and Type 052 destroyers.
The class combined Shtil-based medium-range air defense, anti-ship missiles, guns, torpedoes, close-in defenses, and helicopter support. It was not as advanced as later Type 052C/D ships, but it gave the PLAN better fleet air-defense experience.
Only two Type 052B destroyers were built, making the class a transitional step rather than a large production family. Its service value lies in how it helped the PLAN absorb foreign systems before later indigenous radar and VLS-equipped destroyers matured.
