Type 053 Jianghu/Jiangwei family was developed as a frigate family during a major PLAN modernization phase.
Type 053 covers a long Chinese frigate family, from early Jianghu anti-ship frigates to later Jiangwei variants with better air defense and sensors. It formed the backbone of the PLAN's surface escort force before the Type 054/054A generation and helped China learn serial frigate construction.
