Overview
Type 053H (Jianghu I & II)
The Jianghu I & II class frigates are multipurpose naval vessels operated by the People's Liberation Army Navy, designed for anti-submarine, anti-aircraft, and surface warfare. Introduced in the late 1960s and early 1970s, these frigates displace 1,100 to 1,400 tons, reach speeds of up to 25 knots, and are equipped with various armaments and modernized systems to enhance their combat capabilities.

Research Notes

Mass-produced missile frigate family

medium

The Jianghu I/II Type 053H family grew from earlier Chinese frigate work into a large series of anti-ship missile frigates for the PLAN.

The Type 053H Jianghu I and II frigates marked China's move from gun-oriented escort vessels toward numerous missile-armed surface combatants. Developed from the Type 053 lineage, the ships emphasized anti-surface warfare and fleet numbers at a time when the PLAN needed affordable, domestically built escorts. The class family was produced in significant numbers and became one of the most recognizable Chinese frigate groups of the late Cold War period.

Diesel frigate with guns, missiles, and basic ASW fit

medium

Jianghu variants used a conventional diesel frigate layout with anti-ship missiles, naval guns, light air defenses, and anti-submarine weapons.

The Jianghu I/II technical profile reflected practical Chinese shipbuilding priorities: a manageable frigate hull, diesel propulsion, deck guns, anti-ship missile launchers, light anti-aircraft weapons, and basic anti-submarine equipment. Later subclasses and export adaptations changed radars, guns, missiles, and electronic equipment, but the core design remained a compact missile frigate optimized for regional patrol, escort, and sea-denial missions rather than high-end area air defense.

PLAN workhorse and export foundation

medium

Jianghu frigates served across Chinese fleets, appeared in South China Sea patrol contexts, and formed the basis for several export and follow-on designs.

In service, the Jianghu family gave the PLAN a large pool of missile frigates for patrol, coastal defense, escort, training, and regional presence missions. The ships were reported in South China Sea deployments and also informed Chinese export frigate work for foreign navies. Even as newer Jiangwei, Jiangkai, and Jiangdao designs reduced their front-line importance, Jianghu hulls remained historically significant because they provided the numerical base from which later Chinese surface-fleet modernization proceeded.
