Type 054

The Type 054 Jiangkai I class marked a step away from older Chinese frigate designs toward cleaner lines, reduced signature shaping, and more modern sensors and weapons. Only two Type 054 ships were built before the more capable Type 054A followed.

The original Type 054 combined anti-ship missiles, gun armament, short-range air defense, and helicopter facilities. Its capability was useful but transitional; the Type 054A's vertical-launch air-defense system became the more important mass-production frigate standard.

Although numerically limited, the Type 054 helped establish the hull form and layout direction used in later Jiangkai frigates. Its value in the database is as the bridge between older Type 053 families and the more numerous Type 054A/054B line.
