Type 055 (Renhai)

The Type 055 Renhai class is China's largest modern surface combatant and was developed to support high-end task groups, including carrier operations. Its size, sensors, and missile capacity place it closer to a cruiser-like command-and-air-defense ship than older PLAN destroyers.

Open-source assessments emphasize the Type 055's large vertical-launch system, phased-array radar fit, and ability to carry air-defense, anti-ship, anti-submarine, and land-attack weapons. This makes it a central platform in China's move toward far-seas naval operations.

The Type 055 is significant because it operates as part of a broader PLAN modernization pattern: more capable escorts, carrier groups, and long-range deployments. It should be distinguished from Type 052D destroyers and from smaller frigate classes in role and scale.
