Development and amphibious role

Type 071 Yuzhao-class ships gave the PLAN a modern large landing platform dock for expeditionary operations.

The Type 071, known by NATO as the Yuzhao class, is a Chinese landing platform dock built to move troops, vehicles, landing craft, and helicopters over operational distances. It marked a major step beyond older tank landing ships because it combines a well deck, aviation facilities, command spaces, and greater endurance in one hull. That combination gives the People's Liberation Army Navy a more flexible amphibious tool: the ship can support a landing force, move equipment between theaters, conduct evacuation or disaster-relief tasks, and serve as a command node for maritime operations.

Landing craft and helicopter support

The class is designed around a well deck, vehicle spaces, troop capacity, and helicopter operations.

A Type 071's value comes from the way it integrates sea lift and assault connectors. The well deck can operate landing craft or air-cushion vehicles, while the flight deck and hangar support helicopter movement of troops and supplies. This means the ship can put forces ashore from several directions and can keep heavier vehicles moving even when port infrastructure is limited. Compared with a simple landing ship, the Type 071 gives commanders more options for sequencing a landing, sustaining a beachhead, or keeping forces offshore until the tactical situation is clearer.

Strategic significance

The Type 071 helped shift the PLAN from coastal landing capacity toward broader amphibious expeditionary reach.

In service, the Type 071 is important because it sits between older landing ships and larger Type 075 helicopter assault ships. It helped the PLAN practice and institutionalize longer-range amphibious operations before the arrival of larger aviation-heavy platforms. Analysts often view the class as part of China's wider naval modernization: a move from near-shore defense toward forces able to support operations in the South China Sea, the western Pacific, and overseas presence missions. The ships are therefore useful indicators of China's growing amphibious logistics and command capability.
