Overview
Type 091 (Han)
The Han class submarines are advanced, stealthy vessels designed for maritime defense and surveillance, featuring a compact design of 67 meters and 1,500 tons, accommodating up to 40 crew members. Equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system, sophisticated sonar, and armed with torpedoes and missiles, they offer excellent maneuverability, endurance, and crew comfort, along with advanced life support and safety systems for long-duration missions.

Research Notes

China's first nuclear attack submarine class

medium

The Type 091 Han class was China's first generation of nuclear-powered attack submarines and established the country's SSN design experience.

The Type 091 Han class was China's first nuclear-powered attack submarine program. As a first-generation SSN, it carried the technical burden of proving nuclear propulsion, submarine hull construction, underwater sensors, combat systems, and long-duration operations under Chinese industrial conditions. Even with limitations compared with contemporary Soviet or U.S. submarines, the class gave China the institutional and engineering base needed for later Type 093 and Type 095 nuclear attack submarine development.

Early SSN optimized around endurance, torpedoes, and patrol

medium

Han-class boats paired nuclear propulsion with torpedo armament and submarine sensors, but open sources often describe noise and early-generation technology as major constraints.

Technically, the Han class combined nuclear propulsion with torpedo tubes, sonar, navigation systems, and the endurance expected of an SSN. Its value was the ability to remain submerged and patrol for longer periods than diesel-electric boats, but early-generation Chinese reactor, machinery, and acoustic technologies limited stealth and combat performance. The class therefore functioned both as an operational attack submarine and as a technical learning platform for China's nuclear-submarine enterprise.

Strategic patrol and fleet-shadowing experience

medium

The class conducted operational patrols and is associated in open reporting with encounters involving U.S. naval forces, giving the PLAN nuclear-submarine experience.

Operationally, Type 091 boats gave the PLAN experience with nuclear-powered submarine patrols, fleet shadowing, and distant undersea operations. Public reporting includes a 1994 encounter near Japan involving a Han-class submarine and the USS Kitty Hawk battle group, illustrating both the class's operational reach and the attention it drew from regional navies. Over time, the boats' front-line role declined as newer Chinese nuclear submarines appeared, but their historical importance remains high.
