Research Notes

Modern Czech upgrade of the RM-70 rocket launcher

medium

RM-70 Vampire is an Excalibur Army modernization of the Czechoslovak RM-70 122 mm multiple rocket launcher.

The RM-70 Vampire continues the Czechoslovak RM-70 family by combining the familiar 122 mm rocket-launcher concept with a modern Tatra 8x8 truck platform and updated fire-control and electrical systems. Army Technology describes it as an upgraded version of the RM-70 122 MLRS, with prototype work and firing trials completed in the mid-2010s. It preserves the basic Grad-caliber mass-fire role while improving mobility, reliability, and crew ergonomics.

Forty-tube 122 mm rocket system on Tatra 8x8 chassis

medium

The system uses a 40-tube launcher, automatic reloading support, Tatra T-815-7 8x8 mobility, and cabin or remote firing options.

Technically, Vampire keeps the RM-70 pattern of a 40-tube 122 mm launcher with an onboard reload concept, but mounts it on a modern Tatra tactical truck. CSG describes a self-propelled rocket artillery system with an automatic loading device and the ability to fire single rounds or salvos from the cab or a portable control device. Its value is fast area fires followed by rapid displacement before counter-battery fire arrives.

Mobile salvo fire for area targets

medium

Vampire is intended to strike infantry, artillery, vehicles, and area targets while using wheeled mobility for shoot-and-scoot tactics.

Operationally, the RM-70 Vampire is a battlefield area-fire system. It can saturate target zones such as troop concentrations, artillery positions, and vehicle assemblies, then relocate quickly. Its use of common 122 mm rocket logistics and a rugged Czech truck chassis makes it attractive for operators that need affordable, mobile rocket artillery without moving to larger and more expensive guided-rocket systems.
