Overview
Braunschweig (K130)
The K130 Braunschweig class is the German Navy's latest stealth corvette class, designed for littoral operations and equipped with modern technology, including UMS Skeldar V-200 UAVs and RBS-15 Mk3 anti-ship missiles. Initially intended to replace the Gepard-class fast attack craft, the program has faced delays and cost overruns, with the first five ships commissioned and a second batch planned but postponed.

Research Notes

German Ocean-Going Corvette

medium

The Braunschweig K130 class gives the German Navy a compact ocean-going corvette for patrol, presence, and surface-warfare tasks. Later shipbuilding milestones show continued German investment in the class through additional batches and industrial participation. The K130 fills a niche below larger frigates while still being able to deploy beyond purely coastal waters.

Presence and Surface Warfare

medium

K130 corvettes are optimized for maritime security, surveillance, and surface engagement rather than high-end area air defense. Their smaller size makes them easier to deploy for lower-intensity tasks while preserving naval strike and sensor capability. That role distinction is important: a corvette page should explain what missions the ship is chosen for and what missions remain with larger frigates or destroyers.
