Research Notes

European multi-role attack helicopter

medium

EC665 Tiger is a Franco-German attack helicopter family for armed reconnaissance, escort, fire support, and anti-armor missions.

The EC665 Tiger, now marketed by Airbus as Tiger, is a European twin-engine attack helicopter developed for Germany, France, Spain, and other users. Airbus describes the Tiger HAD as a multi-role attack helicopter for armed reconnaissance, air or ground escort, air-to-air combat, ground fire support, destruction, and anti-tank warfare. For HiWars, its importance is doctrinal as well as technical: it gave European armies a dedicated attack-helicopter platform optimized for expeditionary operations, reconnaissance, and precision fires.

Tandem cockpit, sensors, and survivability

medium

Tiger combines a tandem glass cockpit, roof-mounted sight, digital communications, MTR390 engines, and survivability features.

Tiger's design emphasizes agility, reduced signature, sensor integration, and crew flexibility. Airbus describes a two-seat tandem cockpit where either crew member can manage weapons and flight controls, a gyro-stabilized roof-mounted sight with TV, thermal imaging, laser rangefinding, designation, and tracking, plus battlefield-management and digital communications systems. The narrow silhouette, low radar and infrared signature, ballistic protection, crashworthiness, self-sealing tanks, and redundant architecture all support survivability in low-altitude combat environments.

Variant and deployment record

medium

Tiger variants include German UHT and French/Spanish HAP/HAD models, with deployments in Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, and Central Africa.

The Tiger family exists in national variants rather than one uniform configuration. OCCAR lists Germany's UHT, French HAP and HAD, and Spanish HAP-E/HAD-E deliveries, while Airbus notes operational deployments in Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, Libya, and Mali. The aircraft's practical value depends on variant-specific weapons, sensors, sustainment, and availability. Its service history shows both the benefits of a common European attack-helicopter program and the complexity of sustaining multiple national configurations.
