Research Notes

German air-launched anti-ship missile

The AS.34 Kormoran is a German air-launched anti-ship missile developed for maritime strike aircraft, most notably German naval aviation and later Tornado IDS operations. It was designed for attacks against ships in coastal and North Sea or Baltic operating environments where aircraft needed a standoff anti-surface option.

Fire-and-forget sea-skimming attack profile

Kormoran used active radar terminal guidance and a low-altitude profile to attack surface targets after launch. The missile's role was to let strike aircraft launch from outside the densest point-defense zone, then turn away while the weapon searched for and homed on a maritime target.

Built around NATO maritime strike geography

Kormoran's relevance is tied to Cold War maritime geography: narrow seas, fast target classification, and attacks against amphibious or surface groups operating close to land. It was not a strategic land-attack weapon; its core purpose was to give tactical aircraft a credible anti-ship role in European naval theaters.
