Development as a 5.56 mm light machine gun

The HK MG4 gave German forces a modern belt-fed 5.56 mm light machine gun.

The Heckler & Koch MG4 was developed as a modern 5.56 x 45 mm NATO belt-fed light machine gun. It addressed the need for a lighter infantry support weapon than 7.62 mm general-purpose machine guns while still providing sustained automatic fire from belts. HK designed the weapon for reliability, ergonomic handling, and compatibility with modern infantry equipment. Its emergence reflected a broader NATO pattern: pairing heavier 7.62 mm machine guns with lighter squad-level 5.56 mm support weapons.

Squad automatic fire support

The MG4 is optimized for mobile infantry fire support with lower weight and ammunition burden than 7.62 mm guns.

The MG4's main advantage is portability. A 5.56 mm belt-fed weapon lets infantry squads maintain suppressive fire while carrying more ammunition for a given weight than a 7.62 mm system. Its quick-change barrel, optical sight options, folding stock arrangements, and ergonomic controls support sustained field use. The tradeoff is reduced range and barrier penetration compared with 7.62 mm machine guns. In a balanced infantry weapons set, the MG4 complements rather than fully replaces heavier guns.

Bundeswehr and export use

The MG4 became Germany's light machine gun counterpart to heavier MG3 and MG5 systems.

In service, the MG4 gave German infantry a modern light support weapon aligned with NATO 5.56 mm ammunition logistics. It fits the same force-structure logic as many allied light machine guns: mobile fire for the squad and section level, with heavier 7.62 mm weapons retained for longer-range or mounted roles. Its significance is not only technical but organizational, because it shows the Bundeswehr moving toward a more layered machine-gun family rather than relying on a single general-purpose weapon for every task.
