The Canberra-class landing helicopter dock is based on a Spanish Navantia design and forms the largest amphibious ship class in Australian service. Although the database entry is linked to Spain through the shipbuilding origin, the class is best understood as a joint Spanish-Australian industrial and naval capability package.

The ships combine a large flight deck, vehicle and troop spaces, well-dock capacity for landing craft, medical support, and command facilities. This allows them to move soldiers, helicopters, vehicles, and disaster-relief supplies from sea to shore while also acting as a coordination platform for amphibious or humanitarian operations.

The Canberra design illustrates why modern amphibious ships are valuable beyond combat. In the Indo-Pacific, a large LHD can support evacuation, disaster response, regional engagement, and military deterrence without requiring established ports or airfields at the destination.
