Research Notes

Finnish missile boats built at Rauma

medium

The Rauma class gave the Finnish Navy a fast missile-boat force optimized for archipelago and Baltic operations.

The Rauma-class missile boats were built in Finland for the Finnish Navy as compact, high-speed surface combatants. They fit Finland's requirement for vessels able to operate from dispersed bases, use coastal geography, and deliver anti-ship effects in the Baltic. The class later underwent modernization to keep its combat management, sensors, and survivability relevant as electronic warfare and missile threats evolved.

Missile-boat combat system in a compact hull

medium

Rauma-class craft combine anti-ship missiles, guns, decoys, and modernized command systems rather than frigate-scale endurance.

The class is a fast attack craft rather than a blue-water corvette. Its combat value comes from speed, a small radar signature compared with larger warships, anti-ship missiles, gun armament, and integration with coastal surveillance. Modernization work included command-system improvements and defensive changes such as soft-kill decoys, allowing the boats to remain useful in a networked coastal-defence role.

Sea-denial asset for restricted Baltic waters

medium

The class supports Finland's ability to contest sea control close to its coast and island chains.

Operationally, Rauma-class boats are most effective when operating with shore sensors, aircraft, other naval units, and knowledge of local waters. Their mission set includes patrol, quick reaction, anti-surface warfare, and participation in national and multinational exercises. Like other aging missile boats, their future depends on hull condition and the arrival of newer Squadron 2020 capabilities, but they remain important in Finland's layered maritime defence concept.
