Overview
ATL-2 Atlantique
The Breguet Br.1150 Atlantic, a twin-engine maritime patrol aircraft developed in the late 1950s to replace the Lockheed P2V Neptune, features a unique "double-bubble" fuselage with a 9 m weapons bay and is powered by Rolls-Royce Tyne turboprop engines. Primarily designed for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, it also supports search and rescue, mine operations, and long-range surveillance, with initial production orders for 60 units delivered between 1965 and 1968, followed by additional

Second-generation French maritime patrol aircraft

ATL-2 Atlantique was developed as the improved successor to the Breguet Atlantic for long-range maritime patrol.

The Atlantique 2 is the French Navy's long-range maritime patrol aircraft descended from the earlier Breguet Atlantic. The French Navy describes ATL 2 as a long-endurance patrol aircraft and direct heir to the Atlantic, while Dassault notes the ATL 2 production launch and later modernization support. It was built to track submarines, monitor surface traffic, and support France's maritime deterrence posture.

ASW sensors and long endurance

The aircraft combines long loiter time, maritime radar, acoustic processing, tactical systems, and weapons carriage.

ATL-2's design is specialized for maritime patrol rather than transport. Its sensors support anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface surveillance, search and rescue, and intelligence tasks. The aircraft can operate low over the sea while carrying sonobuoys and weapons. Later Standard 6 modernization improved radar, tactical processing, and electro-optical capability, keeping the platform relevant against modern submarines and surface threats.

Nuclear-submarine protection and maritime surveillance

ATL-2 is central to French naval aviation because it supports both routine maritime security and strategic submarine protection.

In service, Atlantique 2 aircraft perform some of France's most sensitive maritime missions. They patrol sea lanes, support operations abroad, and help protect French ballistic-missile submarines as they enter and leave patrol areas. This gives the ATL-2 importance beyond airframe numbers: it is part of the sensor network that underpins France's naval deterrent and expeditionary maritime awareness.
