Research Notes

French .338 precision rifle between tactical and anti-materiel roles

medium

The Mini-Hecate/PGM 338 was developed as a lighter long-range precision rifle below the large Hecate II anti-materiel class.

The PGM Mini-Hecate, also known as the PGM 338, is a French long-range precision rifle chambered around the .338 Lapua Magnum niche. It emerged in the early 1990s as part of PGM Precision's family of specialist sniper rifles. The weapon fills the gap between 7.62 mm precision rifles and much heavier .50 caliber anti-materiel rifles, giving teams greater reach without the full burden of the largest systems.

Bolt-action .338 Lapua Magnum precision system

medium

The design emphasizes rigid construction, long-range optics, a powerful intermediate magnum cartridge, and portability relative to .50 caliber rifles.

Technically, the Mini-Hecate is a bolt-action precision rifle built for long-range accuracy with .338 Lapua Magnum-class performance. Its chassis, barrel, and optical mounting system are intended for stability and repeatability, while its weight remains more manageable than large anti-materiel rifles. The .338 chambering gives better long-range energy than 7.62 mm NATO while remaining less bulky than 12.7 mm systems.

Specialized long-range sniper role

medium

The rifle is suited to precision engagement at extended ranges where standard sniper rifles are limited but anti-materiel rifles are excessive.

Operationally, Mini-Hecate-type rifles support military and police precision teams that need reach, accuracy, and manageable field carry. They can cover open terrain, overwatch, and specialist long-range missions without moving to a .50 caliber platform. The important content point is role placement: the rifle is not a general infantry weapon, but a specialist precision system for distances and target effects beyond common 7.62 mm sniper rifles.
